Baseball is once more upon us

So the time has come once again for grown men to play a kids game. This kids game has been around for over 100 years and has been part of this nations history. The sport itself is more than just a game; it's more of a tradition that allows young people and old people to discuss something they have in common. That common ground may be the only thing they have that bridges the generations. This sport isn't just about winning, it's more about bringing people together. Of course winning would be everything if your George Steinbrenner, but if you are the average fan who goes to the game to socialize, watch a well played game and cheer for their team. But at the same time this game allows us the convenience to step away for a hotdog and a drink during innings and even a 7th inning stretch. Try that during a football game.

With the convenience we get in this game, we can enjoy a slow paced competition where we don't feel rushed into anything and it allows us the leisure of getting away from a fast paced life that we have as adults may have and relive some of the laid back times that we had in our youth. Sometimes that's even more important that the outcome of the game, of course I want my team to go all the way, I can still enjoy a loss just as much as a win. Of course all of this really is in the eye of the beholder since there are people that believe winning is everything, but if that's what you’re into, maybe baseball isn't the right sport for you.

This is a real nice piece. One of the Qualities of baseball we don't think about enough is the way it brings us together, young and old, black and white, whatever. In a strange city, where you don't know a soul, you can always start a conversation about baseball. And Steinbrenner might be about win at any cost, but baseball fans will almost universally unite in shared hatred of him and his damn Yanks, with a little secret envy for the money he puts in that team...
